This past Sunday Chris Christie, during an appearance on Face The Nation, came out in support of Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign which has a stated mission to battle childhood obesity in America. Christie said that criticism of Michelle's campaign is "unnecessary" and added, "I think it's a really good goal to encourage kids to eat better."
I have one thing to say about Christie's second comment. Duh!
Here's the problem with Christie's path to his point. The parents are the ones who should be teaching and guiding their children to a healthier diet. If they fail in that task, relatives and friends who care should say something to them about paying more attention to their kids. If that doesn't happen, it should fall upon a child's doctor or school nurse to properly inform and instruct the parents.
What we don't need if the government limiting and influencing what we have available to us. What we don't need is a part of the government (Michelle's Let's Move campaign), that is under zero oversight, command and demand what private businesses like Wal-Mart sell and charge people.
Much like when looking at a program at the horse races, when you look at Michelle Obama's past performances it gives great cause for concern.
She's rewarded supporters of her husband with cushy White House staff appointments. Among the most infamous is Desiree Rogers who served as Michelle's social secretary and allowed those party gatecrashers Michele and Tareq Salahi to get into a state dinner uninvited. Rogers also happened to be one of Obama's biggest fundraisers in 2008.
There was Michelle Obama's time as Executive Director of Community Affairs at University Of Chicago Medical Center, which was a position created for Michelle and eliminated when she went to Washington. Among the standout achievements of Michelle during this time was the creation of The Urban Health Initiative which allowed the hospital to receive tax breaks for providing charity care as Michelle engineered a plan to dump low-income patients. She also recommended that the hospital hire David Axelrod (Yes, THAT David Axelrod) for PR projects.
While in her created position at the medical center, Michelle became quite the magician. She could make federal grant money disappear to the degree that a U.S. Senate Committee investigated the lack of oversight and transparency.
Then there was the doctoring of the hospital's project bidding process. This was led by Michelle under the guise of including more minority business owners in the process. The truth is that those new kids on the block, like information tech firm Blackwell Consulting Services, were also supporters and cash cows for her husband.
THIS is who Chris Christie wants to stand with?
